Rutherford Technology High School participated in the recent Regional Envirothon held at Belmont Wetlands, taking out First Place in the Biodiversity and Mapping site, winning a DVD for the school library.   The Regional Envirothon is part of a statewide competition billed as “The ultimate test of environmental skills and awareness for Year 11 students”.

A team of four Year 11 students, competed against students from 9 other high schools in the region.  Students were required to use various sampling, observation and environmental skills at six different sites around the Wetlands.  An oral presentation incorporating the collected data, cultural awareness and personal accounts was then presented to judges and sponsors, with each student required to give a 4 minute presentation.

 

Students were marked on their accuracy, collection and identification of species, cultural awareness and presentation.

 

Principal Michael Whiting says “We are always keen to provide students with an opportunity to put their classroom studies into practice”.  “The Regional Envirothon was a challenging event for our students who were unfamiliar with the area being studied”.  “We congratulate the team on their success”.

We have just finished rolling out 174 Netbooks to YR9 students. They were distributed in a totally random order.
 
YR 9 are reminded to ensure that they charge their Netbook every night and bring it to school each day.

Rutherford High student Laree Wasson has been highly commended in a national logo design competition run across Australia by the Beacon Foundation.

 

Year 10 student  Laree Wasson was one of only eight students highly commended from more than 80 entries Australia wide.

 

The Beacon Foundation, a national not for profit organisation working with schools across Australia to help students with school to work transition via it’s unique No Dole program,  launched the logo competition in July of this year.

 

“We wanted to involve the students in our search for a new, modern logo, and who better to interpret what that may look like, than the students we work with,” Beacon Foundation’s Chief executive Scott Harris said.

 

Highly Commended recipients came from all over Australia with judges impressed with the array of entries, effort and thought that had gone into the designs.

 

Principal Michael Whiting says “Laree is to be congratulated for her initiative in entering this competition”.  “We are delighted that her design has been recognised with a Highly Commended award”.

The new Uniform Shop will open at the school, opening Tuesday 1 December 09.  Daylight Sportswear is operating the shop and providing all items of uniform.  Shop Manager, Aleisha Hudson, will be available during opening hours, as follows:

 

  • Tuesdays from 8.00 am – 12.00 noon
  • Thursdays from 1.00 pm – 5.00 pm

 The Uniform Shop is located adjacent to the Library and all items of the new school uniform will be available there.

 

The new uniform is mandatory for Year 7 and Year 11 in 2010 and there will be a two year ‘phasing in’ period for Years 8,9,10, and 12.   A detailed price list is attached.
