In an exciting sporting initiative by staff from Rutherford Technology High School and Mt View High School, all coalfields zone schools (Maitland, Maitland Grossman, Kurri Kurri, Cessnock, Rutherford, Mt View) have been invited to participate in a Rugby League Gala Day on Thursday 3 August at The Basin, Mt View, Cessnock.
The competition is for U/13 and U/15 age divisions to play in a 10 a side competition, and the Open Division to play in a 7 a side competition.
Kick off in the first game is scheduled for 10.00 am with games scheduled throughout the day until 2.30 pm.
The ARL has thrown their full support behind this competition as it falls in with their policy to promote development of rugby league throughout NSW schools. The Newcastle Knights are also very supportive of the initiative.
The overall champion school on the day will receive a perpetual “Coalfields Cup” trophy.
Rutherford Technology High School teacher, David Thomas, who has been instrumental in organising the Gala Day, says that “this type of inter school competition is an ideal way for players to hone their skills against their peers from other schools in the local area. It also provides great networking opportunities for schools from the Coalfields area to come together and share the challenge of vying for a perpetual trophy.
